Type 4D hair curl pattens need their own TLC; you can’t just “wash and go” and expect them to be kind. They can come out extremely frizzy, dry and tough to the touch if left to their own devices. Especially if you’re in a dry climate or it’s winter season. We can’t promise any singular recipe will work for all type 4 hair patterns because so much of hair care is like diet; it depends on a lot of things. However, he’s an example of a hair care routine that we’ve seen work on 4D hair.

Step 1: Shampoo
Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat Invigorating Shampoo

Start with a botanical shampoo made of natural ingredients. Slather the shampoo generously onto your hair and use a comb or fingertips to massage the scalp.

Pro tip: buy shampoos & conditioners in large quantities to save on cost.
Step 2: Conditioner
Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat Invigorating ConditionerFollow up with a light conditioner that isn’t too harsh on the hair; rinse thoroughly. You don’t want to leave conditioner on your scalp, otherwise, it will burn later!

Pro tip: This brand is infused with tea tree oils to soothe dry scalp, alleviate itchiness and leave your scalp feeling fresh.
Step 3: Oil
Camille Rose Honey HydrateThis leave-in oil is great for thick, dry hair, especially when conditioning oils don’t seem to make it any softer. In the form of honey, this leave in oil penetrates stubborn hair with castor and olive oils, making it easier to moisturize after it dries.

Mesh this into your hair in sections after drying.
Step 4: Apply cream
Proline Comb Thru SoftenerStyle your hair into whatever’s appropriate for it to dry in. We recommend large 2 strand twists, however, anything works.

Comb through your hair with a softening agent, like proline’s softener. This makes it easier to maintain softness down the line & prevent dryness. You can also use this after your hair has dried or prior to any future styling as well.
Step 5: Air dry & moisturize
Oyin Handmade Whipped Butter

Aunt Jackie’s Quench!

After your hair’s dry, feel free to use a daily moisturizer to keep your hair looking bright and manageable. We have 2 recommendations here:

For moisture & definition: Oyin Handmade Whipped Butter. It’s filled with rich shea moisture that will leave your curls feeling soft and gives hair a nice shine.

For coarse/dry hair & manageability: Aunt Jackie’s Quench! It’s a more liquid solution that will instantly relieve any dryness and make hair more manageable and healthy looking.
Step 6: Touch up & refresh
Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Curl Refresher SpraySometimes you don’t want to be bothered with a whole routine, you just want some extra shine or bounce to your 3-day old twist out; enter milk sprays & leave-n sprays. They give your hair more nutrition than just spraying water & are light-weight enough not to cramp your style.

Just spray some onto your hair or fingers & style as you wish.
